Electrical and Plumbing Requirements for Hot Tub Installation

Are you thinking of buying a hot tub for your backyard oasis? We think that’s an amazing idea, but before you can enjoy the soothing waters of your new spa from Grand Traverse Leisure, it’s essential to understand the electrical and plumbing requirements involved in the installation process.

Electrical Requirements:

  • Power Supply
Hot tubs typically require their own dedicated electrical circuit to support their electrical demands. Most of the hot tubs at Grand Traverse Leisure operate around 240 volts, although we do offer some smaller models that require less. When you purchase a hot tub with Grand Traverse Leisure our sales experts will ensure you know and understand your chosen spa’s specifications and local electrical codes to determine the correct power supply needed.
  • Circuit Breaker
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) breaker is a MUST-have for hot tub installations. This safety device protects against electrical shock by quickly turning off power if an imbalance is detected. The breaker’s amperage rating should be compatible with the hot tub’s power requirements.
  • Wiring
Appropriately sized and approved wiring is essential for your hot tub installation. Your spa’s manufacturer will specify what gauge should be used depending on your spa’s size and power. It is important to make sure that all wiring is protected and enclosed within the approved conduit for safety and to prevent damage.
  • Distance & Accessibility
Typically, your area’s local electrical codes state the minimum distance requirements for installing hot tubs near power sources. Make sure that your hot tub complies with these requirements and is located a safe distance from electrical components to prevent any accidental contact with water.

Plumbing Requirements

  • Location
Before installing your new spa, you must first check that your desired location is a good fit. Evaluate the location for plumbing connections, proper drainage, and that it can support the weight of the hot tub when filled with water and occupants. A solid, level surface, like a concrete slab, patio, or specially designed deck, is our typical recommendation.
  • Water Supply
A reliable water source with sufficient flow and pressure is necessary for filling and maintaining the hot tub. Learn more about hot tub maintenance here. If able install a shut-off valve near your water source for safety and convenience.
  • Drainage
Proper drainage is essential for emptying and cleaning your hot tub. A dedicated drain line or nearby drain point should be available to discharge the water safely and efficiently. It is important to research local regulations regarding the drainage of hot tub water, as it may contain chemicals that need proper disposal.
  • Ventilation
It is important to make sure your hot tub is in a place with adequate ventilation. Proper airflow will help control humidity levels and prevent moisture build-up that causes mold and mildew growth.
